Osmond-mania

Posted at 4:34 pm under General

I had a taste of what Osmond-mania was all about. An impressive and a remarkable family. AND very talented musically. They kinda remind me of the von Trapp family.

(The Osmonds and I. All 7 of them look different yet so similar!)

Our earlier arrangement was for PTM to interview 4 of the 7 osmonds. Donny and Marie included. But things changed last minute – as they always do – and we were told 10 minutes before the interview that it was to be all 7 or none. Thank goodness we came prepared with 8 mics because I’d hate to return to the office empty-handed!

The Osmonds are known to be a very tight, close knit family. And it showed during the interview. To whatever question I asked, they would be pretty much singing the same tune and championing the same values. And they know how to give credit where it’s due. They’re not stingy with their words when singing endless praises of each other. Interviewing seven individuals with distinct personality – and all a star in their own right – is a very different ball game from engaging in a conversation with three or even four. It can get messy sometimes… very messy in fact. But the Osmonds would be in rhythm even as they speak! and you couldn’t help but feel at times:” they’ve done this too often/ they know who’s gonna say what next.” No, they definitely didn’t plan it. But yes, I think it’s a result of being so ‘rehearsed’ because of the many many interviews they’ve done over the past 50 years! And yes, perhaps to a certain extent, it’s their strong pride and ego at play… to protect the image and the strong Osmond family bond that everyone knows them for.

Some say the family’s just born to be stars. Marie truly believes so. She says it was natural and normal for her to go into show business.

So, I guess that makes it quote-unquote “natural and normal” for the second generation Osmonds as well to wanna follow their parent’s footsteps too? Why not since they seem to have inherited the family talent. Their last name will surely mean something in show biz too but having said that, it won’t be easy to replicate the success of their parents.

Times have changed, the industry has changed and the audience has changed too. It takes more than talent today to make it big in showbiz today.

There’s no doubt the first generation of singing Osmonds are seen and recognized as an entertainment legend. It’ll be up to the young Osmonds to see if their last name can still work their magic for another 50 years.

hi Suzanne, i was watching the interview with my mum. At first she didnt recognise who they were. And i told her. It’s Donnie and Marie and she laughed, she used to dance to their music.

That’s how long they have been in the business, 50 years. impressive indeed.

Hey Suzanne, I really enjoyed that interview you did with Donny and Marie. Isn’t it amazing it’s 50 years for them?

Are you a fan of the osmonds?

I wish I were at the concert in Singapore to see & hear the Osmunds. The little I heard on PTM revived old memories of one of my favourite song groups I’d listen to on my pocket radio till asleep.

A concept like the Osmonds family wouldnt work in today’s pop culture. It will be laughed out of the a&r exec’s doorway.

I don’t think the Osmonds would be laughed off stage if they were invented today. Corny and goofy concepts still sometimes become hits. Just look at Disney’s High School Musical!

I saw Donny & Marie perform 28 years ago when they first came to these parts. I dun quite understand why the stars only come here these days when they are senior citizens. But I thoroughly enjoyed this Osmonds concert, altho I was disappointed they din sing mos of their hits in the full version. They are certainly a legend in the music business and full deserve it too.

    Hi Suzanne

So lucky of u to interview the Osmonds. I could recall watching Donnie and Marie on TV when I was much younger. I can still remember what a perfect pair they were!

    Hi Suzanne,
My 9mths old infant son, Daniel has been watching CNA since he is 5mths. He has never failed to smile whenever you and Steve are closed up to the camera! :-) Sometimes when Joanne is hosting, I can see he raised his eyebrows. hehehe….

Also, he seem to be a “big fan” of Jennifer too.

    Keep the news rolling. Cheers.

    Hi Suzanne,

It is truly an honour that you can be upclose & personal with the Osmonds. I have watched their shows since when I was much much younger. Both my 2 older brother & sister are big fans of Donny & Marie!

I enjoyed every single bit of your presentation on tv. Your BIG SMILE makes everyone’s day shine BRIGHT!

    KEEP GOING!

I’ve never seen young Donny & Marie live or on film before, only heard their tunes, sang their music and danced to their melody then.

    Hi Suzanne,

What a great picture of you with The Osmonds. I loved the Cardiff concert I went to in May here in the UK, I also bought the VIP package so I finally meet the Osmonds that I had never met.

I have met Donny lots of times and he is such great fun but I had yet to meet Marie and she is wonderful I can say now, such a lovely woman, she is just a few months older than me and so funny as well.

    Thanks for a great report.
    Sue

I guess out of 10 pop corns, I would give Donny & Marie 2 pop corns each, or a total of 4 pop corns. Trust I’m not buying generosity today but hope I’m grateful in giving the rest 6 pop corns. Would you too rate them 10 out of 10!

    Hi Suzanne:

Finally get to chk out the CNA blogs. Tho a little late, I’m glad to find your blog on “Osmond-mania.” An interesting read. They’re my fave group for the longest time so that made me very “jealous” that u got to meet n interview them in person. But i compensated that by going to their concert and guess what??? I got to HUG DONNY….aaahhhhh!!!!! How cool is that!!! Good to see u back on PTM. Ciao!
