Hi Maria, thanks for sharing with us.As for me,the best part of the national Day parade which makes me feel proud to be a Singaporean is when the contingents start marching in and the National songs being sung and of course the splendid fireworks. It reminded us how far we have come afrom a fishing village to a cosmopolitan city. But now,we are feeling the pinch of high fuel and food prices.Hope this will tide over soon.Wishing you a Happy and Blessed National Day!!

Hi Maria, Thanks for sharing your experiences of being a Singaporean who has been abroad for over a decade and yet from your writing, you are undoubtedly still uniquely Singaporean because of the many encounters you've had with people from other nations. I hope you get to eat your laksa on National Day! Wishing you a Happy 43rd National Day wherever you are! :-)

This is really interesting to be because i had assumed there were tons of left handed people in asian nations like China and Japan. It seemed to me that we write with out right hands because out writing goes left to right, and in order to write calligraphy and use brushes and inks from right to left, one would need to be left handed to do it skillfully. Guess i was wrong. Thank you very much for this article though, because it sure did answer a lot of my questions.

I remember how as a child I would envy left-handed friends. =) I wish I could be left handed or at least write with both hands. I can, to a certain degree, but writing from my left hand resembles those of a primary school kid. ^.^"

But it must be frustrating to be left-handed because when you write, you write towards the right side so won't your hand be all smudged with ink?

Hehe I would like to see that happen here. Maybe it will get the service staff to work that little bit faster.

I think Mcdonalds had a similar scheme before. I got a free ice-cream out of them a few times if I recall correctly. Wonder if it is still ongoing.

Maybe tweak the campaign a bit - service staff who fail to smile as they serve you = free drink/ice-cream/coupon. I am a little tired of facing grouchy service staff at fast food joints that look like they've been drinking tom yum soup all their lives.

Wow! You are so lucky. It has been a pleasure reading your posts.Well, they have to implement this scheme as the country gears up for the Oympics. They have to improve the quality of the service.i think their service has improved. At the same time, they can attract more customers and retain old ones.-When foreigners return to their country, they will spread word of mouth.I am glad they treated you well.Hope to see you more on TV.
