Hi,
I am very disappointed with those that have strongly oppose having the foreign worker’s dorm built in Serangoon Gdns.
I live next to an apartment which houses numerous foreign workers. I believe, many that reside in public housing across Singapore share similiar experiences too.
These workers have not caused any trouble or inconveniences for residences here over the past few years they have been here.
I do not believe that their presence have DEVALUED the prices of our estates (if anything, their services rendered to Singapore have contributed to our rising standard of living–hence overall VALUE of our properties).
The way i see this entire incident, is that the disgruntled residents are proposing to house these foreign workers in a seperate estate (just NOT THEIRS). If i am not mistaken, in their own words, they are proposing that the relevant authorities shift the worker’s dorm to another estate, devaluing the prices of ANOTHER SINGAPOREAN’s property instead of THEIRS.
In perspective, if everyone had that same mentality, and fear, then WHERE WOULD WE HOUSE THESE WORKERS? Would we all rather pay additional taxes to reclaim more LAND for the creation of housing for these workers? OR are we saying that we should send these workers HOME just because none of us want to have our status quo affected?
Let us not merely think of our selfish wants and forget about the greater picture.
ps:
1 HDB flat houses close to 130 apartments (13 floors*10 apartments per floor). Each apartment is worth est SGD300,000. That is a est value of $390M PER HDB flat.
On the whole, i do not buy into the resident’s argument that the creation of these foreign worker’s dorms would affect their estate more than others.
Respectfully,
Daniel
People staying in private housing estates believed that they are staying in a world of their own. They wants to protect anything that threaten their “beautiful” way of lives. I guess if these foreign workers were to house inside HBD estates it will be most welcomed by them.
